Man dies after violence erupts at a football match in Dedza

A 36 year-old man has died after he was hit on the head with a brick by a rival fan at a football match in Dedza, Malawi Polie say.

Dedza deputy police spokesperson, Constable Cassim Manda, identified the deceased as Ernest Katemba.

He said police have since arrested a suspect, 20 year-old Alick Dalikeni, and have charged him with murder.

crime (2)Manda said the deceased was among people who went to watch a game between Kukada and Njolo football teams.

According to Manda, 36 minutes into the match, violence erupted and it was at that time when Dalikeni took a piece of brick and hit Katemba on the head.

The deceased fell down and was taken to Dedza district hospital but was then referred to Kamuzu central hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Hospital postmortem revealed that his death was due to internal injuries.

Meanwhile, Manda has advised all football fans in the country to take football as a game rather than a field for battle.

He warned that there will be more arrests of perpetrators who are fond of inciting violence during football matches.

Dalikeni hails from Njolo village in the area of Traditional Authority Kaphuka in the district and he will face a murder charge that attracts a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
