The Malawi leader has been criticized by former ruling People’s Party (PP) for branding ex President Joyce Banda as the master minder of the infamous Cashgate scandal.

Mutharika: Told the BBC that cashgate started with Joyce Banda.

President Peter Mutharika has asked donors that they should not to punish him for the sins that were committed by the Joyce Banda administration.

“You are punishing the wrong people. Cashgate was done by the previous government. Are you going to punish the subsequent government that was not involved in the scandal? In the end, it is the people who suffer when donors withhold support. What is currently happening in Malawi is very serious. We have no medicine in the hospitals because the donors left” said Mutharika in an interview with BBC Hard Talk.

The Malawi leader went ahead to say that over $60 million of public funds stolen by Peoples Party and government officials including cabinet members in the Joyce Banda government,

“We are facing very serious difficulties [because] cashgate left nothing in the treasury… About $60 million was stolen by officials in the Joyce Banda regime. Because of cashgate, donors who provide 40% of budget support left us”.

But in reaction, PP Publicity and Administrative Secretary   told Malawi24 wondered why Mutharika would ‘lie’ to the world about Cashgate.

Msonda said that Mutharika is well aware that the looting of funds started with his brother the late President Bingu wa Mutharika.

‘’It was unfortunate and undemocratic that our President could lie to the whole world that cashgate started with the PP when he knows in his heart of hearts that it started with when his late brother was head of state’’.

Msonda remained Mutharika that at that time, he served as a cabinet Minister and was an advisor to the Bingu wa Mutharika.

The PP has since defended the era of Joyce Banda citing that it is the government that ignited probe into the looting as well as pushed for the arrest of over 70 suspcets some of whom are sparing themselves cold nights in Malawi prisons for their roles into the scandal christened Cashgate.

Mutharika has recently been criticized by Banda for trying to politically haunt her, something which exonerates the ex leader who remains outside Malawi in fear of being arrested.

It is highly asserted that the Mutharika administration has intention to arrest Banda over her feared involvement n the scandal, something which the DPP has incessantly been parrying away.

  26. If peter wants donors aid back then he has to make sure that all those who stole govt. money from the time of bingu and to the time of Joyce face the law and clean up all govt. institutions. Even if he does that and donor aid comes in, Peter will show the whole world that he has failed to develop malawi on his own but that he depends on foreign aid. Its time Peter has to find solutions on how to utilize our own resources to develop this country. some of us we have solutions, we can help if given chance and opportunity to be heard.
