In a year that the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) joined Malawi’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) at its benches in the National Assembly, things are reportedly getting chaotic within the structures of the party.
Reports Malawi24 is following indicate that the UDF has axed its Vice President, Iqbar Omar on what has been dubbed as ‘his tendency not to respect the party’s decisions and ideas’.
An inside source told a Malawi24 reporter in Blantyre over the weekend that this was reached at by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) which met in a closed meeting on Friday.
”The veep is said to have been opting for decisions against what the party condones and agree. He was said to have been behind some faction that have parallel structures with the current leadership.” said the source.
The meeting which was attended by President Atupele Muluzi was also told that Omar has been snubbing to be available before the NEC disciplinary committee for him to clear his face over the incessant complaints the other party officials have been making.
” But today he (Omar) was present at the meeting where he met his ruling”.
The NEC has also chopped Director of Women Zaituna Yusufu and Acting Regional Governor for Bua Region, Mr Moyenda.
On the other side, the NEC has also booted out Central Region Governor Deputy Governor Mr Magombo.
Analysts have lately hinted that the switch by UDF to government benches will irk conflicts within the party whose leader has been close to government.
It is since asserted that Omar had been against the decision,something which the UDF is yet to clear up.
