Five people have died and eight others have sustained serious injuries in a road accident that happened in the wee hours of today in Chikhwawa district , Malawi police say.
Chikhwawa police spokesperson, seargent Stephano Muthama, said the accident happened on Belewu road in the district.
He added that the accident is as a result of careless driving and says the car was at a very high speed that led to failure of the driver to control it.
Meanwhile, police says they are yet to establish the names of the five people who have died but their remains are being kept at Chikhwawa district hospital.
The police have since opened two cases for the driver, Mussa Chilembwe, 32, from Mwahara village in the area of Traditional Authority Mkalo in Chiradzulu.
The cases include careless driving and carrying people in a car which was supposed to be carrying goods only.
