Just hours after Malawi24 flew a story that a Malawian man in Mzuzu has been jailed for 21 years for rape, another one in Blantyre City has 16 years awaiting him in prison on a similar case.

Blantyre senior resident magistrate, Chikondi Mandala, has sentenced a man to 16 years imprisonment with hard labor (IHL) for defiling a 9 year-old girl.

The convict, Dwale Kalaya, 27, defiled the girl on October 7 this year. Blantyre police spokesperson Elizabeth Divala said parents of the girl reported the matter to Chilobwe police station.

“When the girl arrived home her parents quizzed her with questions after noticing that the she was having challenges to walk,” she said.

According to Divala, the police arrested Kalaya but he was later released on bail.

“After the convict was released on bail he has been on run but our investigation led us to arrest him in Ntcheu district where he went,” said Divala.

Divala further said the convict pleaded not guilty to the defilement charges but a medical report from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital revealed that the girl was defiled.

Kalaya hails from Matchemba village, Traditional Authority Bvumbwe in Thyolo.

This comes amid incessant rape cases being reported country wide.

Police are appealing to all victims to report matters of that sort to police stations as soon as possible.
