Malawian soccer star Gerald Phiri Jnr is likely to be released at Bidvest Wits in South Africa as the club has invited another player for trials, Malawi24 has learnt.

The former Mighty Wanderers attacker has been idle for a long time since he joined the club but Bidvest say they are working on his work permit.

It seems that the club is not interested in the unregistered Malawian whom many soccer fans in his motherland love for his performances for the national football team.

Bidvest Wits have only a single space available for a foreign player but they have invited for trials Zimbabwean Striker Knox Mutziwa whom the South African media have labelled a ‘goal machine’.

Mutziwa, 22, plays for his home side club Highlanders and is the top goal scorer in the Zimbabwean top league with 14 goals from 17 games and was named among the league’s best 11 players last season.

If the Zimbabwean passes the trials and Bidvest Wits sign and register him, it means that Phiri will be allowed to go as the club would have reached their limit for foreign players.

Besides, it is reported that the club have put aside an English striker, James Keene, who has been at the club for trials and are waiting to compare him to Mutziwa for them to determine the one to be registered. South African football laws stipulate that each club must register not more than five foreign players. At this moment, Bidvest Wits have already registered four foreign players and that means there is only a single slot for another foreign player.
