Malawi Opposition People’s Party (PP) has warned President Peter Mutharika administration against holding a retirement package for former President Joyce Banda.
Earlier, government disclosed that everything was set for Banda to get her retirement package despite her staying outside the country.
However, in an interview with Malawi24 on Thursday, PP spokesperson, Ken Msonda, said government has not yet provided anything to the office of the former president.
“There was a house that was identified and as a party we were told on that, officials from the office of the former President and former first gentleman went to see the house, it is the government that withdrew at the last minute.”
“Mind you, Mutharika is not a life President, today he is a sitting President but tomorrow he will be a former President so if you are mistreating someone expect people to treat you in the same way,” said Msonda.
Msonda further said Mutharika must be careful with people around him arguing that they might give him wrong information so that he should lose popularity.
“We know we have a President with good intentions, well knowledgeable, traveled widely but we are surprised that he is making blunders and as a party we feel that they are the same people around him who are giving him wrong information so that he should be seen to be failing to deliver.”
“What he must know is that they are the same people who are going for his position tomorrow so he must be very very careful,” said Msonda.
Banda left the country after the 2014 polls and she has demanded that government provides her retirement package without which she will not return Malawi.
