The National Association of Nurses and Midwives in Malawi (NONM) has applauded donors for suspending aid to Malawi.

Executive director for NONM, Dorothy Ngoma, said the action by donors to suspend aid to the country needs to mark a way for setting priorities and transparency.

“It is very embarrassing that you are helping someone to have a shirt but the person is using the money to drink beer, how can donors come in to help if you are not setting priorities.”

Ngoma says donors opted for a good decision.

“There is no food for the patients in public hospitals and the government says there is no money and the same government is spending millions of Kwacha to buy luxury vehicles while people are dying in hospitals,” Ngoma told the local press.

Ngoma further said authorities need to stop taking money from the public purse to buy luxuries.

“Those who need cars should wait this is not the time to buy cars, whatever is there should be directed to important sectors,” added Ngoma.

Several of Malawi’s donors cut off aid to the country due to lack of transparency and accountability.
