It remains a tough week for Malawi President Peter Mutharika and besides his National Address being dubbed ’empty’, he is also being accused of favoring people from the Southern Region particularly the Lhomwe belt where he comes from in most top government positions.
Former ruling Peoples Party (PP) through its leader in the August House, Uladi Mussa wondered why tribesmen some of whom do not have the wits to manage the offices they are given to run are benefiting from Mutharika’s influence and both keep enrich themselves at the expense of ‘deserved’ people to work in the posts but are from the other regions and tribes.
While blaming the Malawi leader for nepotism, Mussa hinted that the situation is worrisome as Malawi keeps sailing through troubled waters due to selfishness of people in top posts including the President.
Mutharika has since been asked to put to an end any kind of nepotistic approach in giving positions to people.
After the appointment of his cabinet last year, Mutharika was railed at for picking more bearers from the Southern region.
Initially, leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mr. Lazarus Chakwera has said Malawi President Peter Mutharika delivered a ‘zero-plan’ speech.
In response to the speech that President Mutharika made when he presided over the opening of the 46th session of the Malawi Parliament, Mr. Chakwera who is also President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) explained that it is “almost impossible to find anything of substance” in the president’s speech apart from its 23-minutes duration.
“The one positive thing from the President’s address is that it only lasted 23 minutes, so at least he was kind enough not to take too much of our time with his Zero Plan Speech. The President’s speech avoided so many national issues that it is almost impossible to find anything of substance to respond to” said Chakwera.
The Leader of Opposition who during the previous Parliamentary session had branded Mutharika a babysitter taking Malawi on a bumpy ride, reiterated his earlier remarks saying the only thing that Mutharika has achieved is making the country bankrupt.
“We are now officially a nation in the unenviable position of having a government with no plan, and a President who claims that he has a national agenda or National Development Strategy without ever telling us what it is or what part ordinary Malawians should play in it. Under the leadership of President Mutharika, we are not only financially bankrupt, but also bankrupt of sound policies and plans to move Malawi into a prosperous nation”.
