Mzuzu Market Fire

Traders at Matabwa market in Malawi’s Mzimba district have expressed mistrust with their chairman Albert Chisiza alleging that he is masterminding corrupt activities.

Speaking to Malawi24 on Monday, some vendors maintained they hate Chisiza’s leadership because he solicits bribes from other vendors.

They were speaking this after a wrangle that erupted among vendors who were fighting over some pieces of plots at the market.

“What happened was that after the market got razed down by fire, the chair failed to relocate us in our places. “When we came, all plots were given to strangers. Then our assumption remains that he got some bribes from them to betray us, why selling our plots?” queried Mercy Mgemezulu.

At the time our reporter reached the place, chaos and tension were very high as vendors were exchanging foul words with their chairman.

This is the same market that was consumed by fire weeks ago which cost vendors about 200 million Kwacha.

On his part, the chairman, Chisiza, said the problem came due to limited space at the market. He distanced himself from any corrupt acts saying he has never solicited any bribe from anyone when allocating plots.

“We had only about 262 plots but many people are looking for the same. We have no option because of limited space but about bribes I am not concerned at all,” said Chisiza.

Meanwhile, some traders have threatened to take the matter to the district commissioner for guidance and justice.
