…Mutharika offered no indication that he knows what he is doing

Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mr. Lazarus Chakwera has said Malawi President Peter Mutharika delivered a ‘zero-plan’ speech.

In response to the speech that President Mutharika made when he presided over the opening of the 46th session of the Malawi Parliament, Mr. Chakwera who is also President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) explained that it is “almost impossible to find anything of substance” in the president’s speech apart from its 23-minutes duration.

“The one positive thing from the President’s address is that it only lasted 23 minutes, so at least he was kind enough not to take too much of our time with his Zero Plan Speech. The President’s speech avoided so many national issues that it is almost impossible to find anything of substance to respond to” said Chakwera.

The Leader of Opposition who during the previous Parliamentary session had branded Mutharika a babysitter taking Malawi on a bumpy ride, reiterated his earlier remarks saying the only thing that Mutharika has achieved is making the country bankrupt.

“We are now officially a nation in the unenviable position of having a government with no plan, and a President who claims that he has a national agenda or National Development Strategy without ever telling us what it is or what part ordinary Malawians should play in it. Under the leadership of President Mutharika, we are not only financially bankrupt, but also bankrupt of sound policies and plans to move Malawi into a prosperous nation”.

Chakwera hit at Mr. Mutharika’s inability to lay out an overarching plan of action to bring the country out of its economic slump. The Opposition leader said the president demonstrated a serious lack of leadership.

“President Mutharika began by declaring that ‘Malawi is at a very critical stage’. This is an incontrovertible fact and Malawians deserve to hear a full report on the progress being made to reverse this. However, the President’s failure to take full stock of the state of the country’s economy, food situation, security, social welfare, governance and other national issues is an insult to the Malawians that employed him to say how bad things are and what he is doing about it. Mutharika offered no indication that he knows what he is doing”

He also lambasted the President for taking the country through what the leader of the opposition called “untold nepotism” in the history of Malawi as only people belonging to a single tribe are appointed in public positions.
