Distribution of subsidized farm inputs to start next week

The Malawi Government says the distribution exercise for the 2015/2016 Farm Inputs Subsidy Program (FISP) will start next week.

Speaking in Lilongwe at the Opening of Agriculture Sector Joint, Minister of agriculture, irrigation and water development Allan Chiyembekeza said the distribution has delayed because government was engaging with potential suppliers and distributors.

“We delayed in the distribution because we had to go through a lot of discussions with suppliers and distributors but it was not our intention to delay the distribution of the subsidized items,” said Chiyembekeza.

He further said that Malawians must not think that the delay might lead to low yield “We are targeting 1.5 million farmers out of 5 million in the country, it is a small proportion but Malawians should not get worried that there would be low yields,” he said.

Meanwhile, over 20 thousand metric tonnes have been distributed in different areas of the country.

Government increased the price of subsidized fertilizer by 600 percent of which some quarters have argued that the hike is too high considering that the beneficiaries are poor.

Last year, 50kg of fertilizer for FISP used to cost K500, now it costs K3, 500, a packet of maize seed of about 5kg will be bought at K1000 and a packet of legume seed will cost K500.
