Devotion: We have a heavenly calling

Prayer

Heb 3:1 “Therefore, holy brothers, partners in a heavenly calling, keep your focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.”

The scripture above shows us that there is a HEAVENLY CALLING which we are partners to and this calling entails keeping our focus on Jesus. As there is a heavenly calling, there is also an earthly calling which we refer to as a Career. Sometimes our earthly calling is in line with heavenly calling whereas other time it is not. However its the desire of the father that we discover and focus on Heavenly Calling.

Peter the Apostle was a fisherman in His earthly calling and in his heavely calling he was made a fisher of men. Mar 1:17 “…Follow me, and I’ll make you fishers of people.”

PrayerIn the heavenly calling we mind a lot on things above not on things on earth. We dont just focus on money but on completing the mission of the Father. Where we live and what we do should be mostly driven by the Heavenly Calling not just on money. Col 3:1-2 “Therefore, if you have been raised with the Messiah, keep focusing on the things that are above, where the Messiah is seated at the right hand of God. Keep your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth.”

Every believer should discover their heavenly calling that should shape their eathly calling to be in line with their heavenly calling. Its possible to combine your heavenly calling and earthly calling but ensure that the heavenly calling should not be overshadowed completely by your earthly calling. Earthly calling should support your heavenly calling. For example Paul was a manufacturer of tents. Act 18:3 “and because they had the same trade he stayed with them. They worked together because they were tentmakers by trade.” Paul had a company making tents in his earthly calling and was an Apostle in His heavely calling. He used his earthly calling to support his heavenly calling. He combined both but the heavenly calling was outstanding in his life.

You have therefore no excuse of not honoring God by obeying the Heavenly calling in your life. Ensure that wherever you go, whether its in your nation or outside, fulfil the heavenly calling on your life. God will reward you based on his heavenly calling in you. Heavenly calling is always about winning souls to the Kingdom. Whatever you are doing on earth, soul winning should be your priority. Use your earthly career to win many souls. We are to go to all nations to preach and win souls( Mat 28:19). Your business or position at work can be a great tool to win many in your sphere to Christ.

Paul was excited when he had accomplished his heavenly calling. Heavenly calling gives more filfilment than the earthly. 2Tim 4:7-8 “I have fought the good fight. I have completed the race. I have kept the faith. The victor’s crown of righteousness is now waiting for me, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on the day that he comes, and not only to me but also to all who eagerly wait for his appearing.”

In both calling we need to work hard. Col 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it wholeheartedly as though you were doing it for the Lord and not merely for people.”

Remember: You were created and brought on earth to fulfil your heavenly calling, therefore earthly calling should just be a support to your heavenly calling not the other way round.

Prayer

  1. Thanks pastor for sharing that word. However, one of these days I would like you to share with us more about the habit of drinking.
