Opposition Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) silence on the purchase of four cars worth K300 million for two deputy speakers, leader of opposition Lazarus Chakwera and the speaker of the national assembly has sparked anger from Civil Society Youth Consortium (CYSC).
According to CYSC, the party has been silent to comment on the matter because two of the four beneficiaries are from MCP.
The youth body said the party through its spokesperson Jessie Kabwila are on record to have condemned President Peter Mutharika for taking with him a large delegation at United Nations 2015 general meeting in New York.
A statement that has been signed by youth bodies in all the three regions of the country has described the development as “immorality and impudence”.
“First and foremost, as CYSC our stand on the matter is that it is a bad decision and there is no justification whatsoever on why it was done in the first place. Comments by the Speaker himself saying ‘do you want us to walk’ are just as insulting as they are rude,” reads the statement.
The consortium further added that government could have addressed economic challenges that have rocked public sectors across the country.
“Both the Speaker and Leader of Opposition already use official vehicles and could have done without the new ones in addition to the personal ones which they obtained through whooping K24million loans that were made available to them in their capacities as Members of Parliament.
“With the K80 million and K96 million vehicles added to the loan allocation it means the poor taxpayer from Nthalire in Chitipa, Marka in Nsanje, Kamwendo in Mchinji, Chatoloma in Kasungu, Mtandile in Lilongwe and all others in the country, have parted with K104 million and K120 million for Chakwera and Msowoya funding their extravagance as the rest of the population reel in pain,” reads part of the statement.
