Chakwera branded a hypocrite

At a time when the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is accusing government of not putting matters of locals at heart, the party has been criticized of being greedy and hypocritical.

This follows media revelations that Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya, who is also Veep of MCP and its leader Lazarus Chakwera who heads opposition parties in the August house, have been demanding luxurious pays and vehicles from the National Assembly.

According to a report carried by the Daily Times last week, Msowoya is using a Toyota Land cruiser V8 which cost about K96 million while Chakwera together with two deputy speakers have been using Toyota Prado VXs costing K80 million each.

Chakwera and Msowoya hit headlines for fueling luxurious spending.

However, this comes when the opposition has been railing against President Peter Mutharika for blowing millions of money with his controversial entourage at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

In response, Msowoya hinted that they cannot be walking hence the official vehicles were needed.

Msowoya also argued that the vehicles were bought last year and it is unfortunate that government is angry with the purchase.

Following the news, Malawi24 has been following debates on social media and it shows the MCP is has invited the wrath of Malawians on the basis that the news shows that the opposition party fails to live the talk.

Vic Mandiwe, a Facebook user, questioned the whole essence of the MCP turning its ire on Mutharika when its leaders are actually failing to set an example.

“It’s so disheartening how MCP President Lazarus Chakwera and his vice who also happens to be a leader of opposition can have the audacity to spend a whooping MK300 Million on just four vehicles. With this single act, they have lost moral ground to stand and criticise vision-less Mutharika government. It’s high time we offloaded all useless politicians, they have nothing new to offer,” Mandiwe wrote in one of the Facebook posts that have ignited debate on the matter.

Some Malawians have since branded Chakwera and the MCP as ‘hypocrites’

  5. Useless.U so called Ras conrad makonyola What kind of vehicles do your puppet leader who head one arm of Malawi givernment use??Do you know that the Malawi Government has three arms which are indipendent of each other? So u think a speaker can have just one car or should be travelling on a vitz or duet?

I know u are desperate to atleast find something to accuse Hon. Dr. Lazaras Chakwera but know that you are bound to fail and failure is already in u.

After all those are MG branded vehicles much that even if that uncle of urs who failed miserably in the race for speaker may use them if one day he is speaker of Parliament.

The cars were not registered as MCP 1 & MCP 2 NO.If that was the case maybe u could have had a case but not on this one NO.

  13. Cheap politics, it is the government that bought the cars not chakwera, who authorised the payment? Isnt u? If not then u have failed to run the government? how come that an opposition member buys a car using government money?

    1. Inuyo HON. Walani Nenani Mmene Parliament Imayendetsera Chuma Chake Ngakhale Dzina Lanulo Ndilosadziwika Ku Parliament. What Do U Want Us To Believe?

  14. Stop right there; from my understanding the vehicles were only purchased last year 2014, however we need to verify this. Malawians please can we be analytical in thinking before commenting on issues. If indeed these vehicles were purchased last year, who authorized for the transactions? Is something to do with supporting party leaders without using our heads?
From the above comments; one wonders as why at this stage of democracy we are still wrapped up in regional politics?

Please Malawi observe from the world as how political stage is utilized to the beneficial of citizens regardless of which parts of the particular country they are coming from!

  15. Msowoya is using commissioners at parliament to get more benefits. Ife aku accounts we have details. Commissioners perks were not approved by the president but Maowoya is using them. Anagula phone pomes as a speaker he gets another

  16. In fact Msowoya and parliamentary commissioners are getting hefty allowances. Msowoya has bought himself a phone 800 000 as speaker and another off the same value as Chairperson of parliamentary service. Ife am mp tikupisa kuwaombela mmanja agalu amenewa

  17. Both the Daily Times and Malawi24 could have investigated and analysed the issue before branding MCP as a hypocrite. If the vehicles were bought in 2014, are you saying these transactions were authorised by Msowoya and Chakwera with all the beauracracy that is in government? Let us be serious please! Only DPP supporters can clap for this trash

    1. U’re Also Free To Claim U’reself Man Of God since U’re God’s Creature.WAKUBELANI CHIYANI CHAKWERA ?

  23. I started seeing these vehicles last year meaning that they were purchased last year (2014). Why is the story coming out now? Who is fooling who here? And who approved purchase of these vehicles in the first place? What is the policy on vehicles for these offices – parliament, the judiciary and cabinet ministers (executive)? Something is not adding up here. Is someone trying to justify the 115 UNGA delegation and the over K300 million blown on that trip? May be Hon. Jappie Mhango can be kind enough to shade some light on these issues before we label Chakwera and his team hypocrites. I am not saying they are not hypocrites, but we need to have full information before we can brand them as such. This country is on its knees and we cannot afford such luxury, but I will only take a position after getting answers to the questions above. Otherwise I see this as another decoy by government to divert peoples’ attention from the criticism they have received on the 115 UNGA delegation….

  24. Adachita bwino kugula magalimoto kusiyana ndi cashgate. Nawoso azifewetsa moyo.
