Dust is refusing to settle in Malawi opposition Alliance for Democracy (Aford) following latest revelations that a group by the name of ‘friends of Aford’ has given the party until 30 November 2015 to call for a convention or face unspecified action.

According to reports, the group has labeled the current leader Enock Chihana as visionless, accusing him of taking the party as a personal entity.

Acting chairperson of the group Chandiwona Ngwira signed a statement on behalf of the concerned members, faulting the entire National Executive Commitee (NEC) and all regional and district chairpersons of bringing the party down.

Chihana: Branded vision-less.

“Since you were elected into office in 2013 convention, you have never conducted such conference or held political rallies as other parties do.

“Therefore, we are demanding a convention so that we correct such mistakes because that is against democracy which Aford was in forefront fighting for,” reads part of the statement.

However, Aford spokesperson Khumbo Mwagulu refused to recognise the pressure group.

He trashed the group saying it has no power to question the leadership and how the party is being run.

“We had such a group sometime back but we sat down and dissolved it so who are these people and where are they coming from? We agreed to build the party together but not using these channels, who is behind them?

“They don’t have a mandate to call for a convention because they are not in the governing council of the party. The president and NEC members will call for a convention when necessary. We are restructuring the party so they must back off,” he said.
