Malawi Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody a security guard belonging to Omega Guard Service for allegedly stealing two laptops and cash amounting to K22.5 million from a Chinese national Chen Jian at Area 3 flats in the city.
According to Lilongwe police spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula, the suspect has been identified as Paul Malembo, 28 from Mkope village in the area of Traditional Authority Mkumba in Mangochi district.
Dandaula said on Saturday the Chinese national left his flat for his Haoli factory and left Malembo guarding the premises.
Upon coming from the factory, Jian found his bedroom window open and the guard was no where to be seen. After a thorough look, he noticed that his money had gone missing together with two laptops.
Dandaula said that police apprehended Malembo at Chingeni roadblock as he was heading towards Mangochi with K6 million and an Omega uniform.
Dandaula said upon being interrogated at Balaka police station, the suspect confessed and mentioned a second suspect who is still at large.
Meanwhile, investigations are still underway to get the second suspect arrested and to find the remaining cash.
Police have since urged the general public to safely keep their money and not to keep such huge amounts in their homes.
