As Malawi is still debating on whether to adopt federalism a Mzuzu based human rights activist Moses Mkandawire has recognized lack of awareness on democracy amongst many people in the country as the reason for the confusion.
Malawians especially those from the northern part of Malawi have argued that the unitary system of government has failed the country and are now advocating for federalism.
According to the proponents of federalism, the current unitary system is promoting nepotism and corruption thus needs to be eliminated for the betterment of the country.
Mkandawire however says there are no proper strategies to facilitate the democracy in the country.
“Principles of democracy remain a challenge because there are no proper strategies to implement them. Above all many Malawians are not aware on the whole concept of democracy,” claimed Mkandawire.
He also said politicians interfere with affairs of some institutions that are critical to democracy like the Malawi Human Rights Commission, the Ombudsman and the Anti-corruption Bureau.
According to Mkandawire, such institutions are not fully funded because of lack of political will thus it will be difficult for democracy to be judged because so far more has to be done for people to start enjoying the benefits of democracy.
“So how can the country sustain the system because the same institutions are very essential to the sustainability of the system?” queried Mkandawire.

We really need to go back to school to understands democracy. Donors forced us into this democracy without teaching us is really it is. Majority of the voters are tea pickers, tobacco estates tenants and vendors who don’t know anything at assessing good presidential candidates other than where they come from.
Moses Mkandawire, advocate for this knowledge gap and at least pple should wake up from the slumber.
