Malawi Police in Nsanje district are keeping in custody a 20 year old man suspected to have murdered a 1 year old girl for crying as he was raping her.
Confirming the development to Malawi24, National Police Spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo identified the suspect as Frank Fole from Milias Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mbenje in the district.
It is reported that at around 19:00 hours on October 2, 19-year-old Malifa Chiwanga, who is the mother of the baby, who is also from the same area with the suspect, took her daughter to a nearby village for a night dance.
Coincidentally, Chiwanga met the father of her daughter at the dance, Gift Kamponi who at a later stage pleaded with her to go back home with the baby, saying it was night and she was supposed to be sleeping at home with the baby.
The wife refused to go back home a development that angered the man who finally took the daughter and sent his young sister to leave the baby at his mothers place.
On her way, Kamponis sister met the suspect who convinced her that she can give him the baby and he would deliver her to the recommended person. The man went away with the baby the whole night.
On the next morning, the suspect was questioned the whereabouts of the baby and he was quick to reveal that he has killed the baby as she was crying when defiling her.
According to Manjolo, this angered the community who forced him to show them where he has dumped the baby. The baby was found somewhere away from the village.
Medical examination shows that the girl died due to suffocation as she got strangulated.
Meanwhile, the suspect is now struggling for his life at Nsanje District Hospital as people in the village manhandled him. He is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of murder.
