Malawi Govt makes U-turn on minimum wage

The Malawi government through Ministry of Labour, Youth and Manpower Development has revised  and increased statutory minimum wage to take its effect from 1st October.

According to the press statement released and signed by secretary for Ministry of Labour, Youth and Manpower Development, Patrick Kabambe explains that the statutory minimum wage has been revised upwards from five hundred and fifty one Kwacha (K551.00) per day to six hundred and eighty seven Kwacha seventy tambala (K687.70) per day, effective 1st October 2015.

Work-MalawiThe Ministry cautioned employers not to pay an employee a wage that is below the prescribed statutory minimum wage.

“This new minimum wage applies, without exception, to all sectors of our economy and all areas.

“Employers are hereby reminded that, in terms of section 55 of the Employment Act, Cap 55:01, it is an offence to pay an employee a wage that is below the prescribed statutory minimum wage”, emphasized the statement.

The ministry explained that this is a minimum standard and employers are encouraged to go beyond this set minimum in order to improve the welfare of workers.

The adjustment of the wage comes as employees in the country continuing complaining that they are getting low wage comparing to increase in necessity commodity prices due to the down of country’s economy.
