Malawi Police are looking for 35 year old Liness Kapalamula of Kamphinde village Traditional Authority Ndindi in Salima district who is alleged to have disappeared after dumping her newly born baby in a toilet.

According to the Deputy Spokesperson for Sourthen Region Police, Widson Nhlane, Kapalamula gave birth to a child and threw it into a toilet a few hours after.

Nhlane said the suspect is a widow and she found a boyfriend whose particulars are yet to be known, and became pregnant.

crime (2)But it is reported that on 23 September people saw Kapalamula without the pregnancy and this surprised the members of her community. Attempts by community members to have her explain the whereabouts of her pregancy proved futile as Kapalamula remained silent when she was quizzed.

Kapalamula later disappeared in the early hours of Thursday 24 september, and her boyfriend tipped neighbours about the incident. People then dug the toilet and took the remains of the baby to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital children mortuary.

Malawi has registered a lot of cases where women especially young women dump their babies into toilets soon after giving birth.
