President Lazarus Chakwera has ordered the immediate release of former commissioner of Malawi Electoral Commission Linda Kunje.

Chakwera through Minister of Homeland Security Jean Sendeza has ordered the immediate release of Kunje who is serving an 18 month prison sentence for blocking Chakwera’s convoy.

In a letter to chief commissioner of prisons dated 6 December, Sendeza said Kunje is on the list of prisoners set to be pardoned during the Christmas Period.

“I therefore write you to release the said prisoner immediately,” reads the statement.

In August this year, Zomba Chief Resident Magistrate Austin Banda sentenced Kunje to 18 months in prison and also sentenced Kunje’s former driver Jones Tewesa to 15 months in prison for criminal, recklessness and negligence after they obstructed President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy in 2020.
