Chakwera to open Region 5 youth games on Friday

Minister of Youth and Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda says all is set for the Region 5 youth games which will be officially opened this Friday by President Lazarus Chakwera.

Chimwendo told journalists on Tuesday at Griffin Saenda game complex in Lilongwe that most of the facilities that were under construction are almost completed and ready to host the games.

“We are encouraging families, youths and everyone to be coming and watch the region 5 youth games starting from 2nd December up to 11 December this year. The good news is that the games will be for free so please come in large numbers to support our youths,” he said.

The Minister went on to say that the games which are under 19 were formed with the aim of promoting peace, coexistence in the African countries.

Chimwendo added that the games are also aimed at improving the sporting activities in Africa.

Hosts Malawi as well as Botswana, eSwatini, Lesotho, Mozambique , South Africa, Zambia, Angola, Zimbabwe and Namibia are expected to participate in 12 sporting codes which will attract about 3,500 athletes.
