Man arrested for insulting Malawi Minister of Labour

Police in Lilongwe have arrested 51-year-old Dauka Manondo over a WhatsApp post in which he allegedly insulted Vera Kamtukule, Malawi’s Minister of Labour.

Manondo published the post on April 24, 2022, the day President of the Republic arrived in Malawi from Mozambique through Kamuzu International Airport.

On the day, Kamtukule led ministers and other dignitaries who were at the airport in welcoming the head of state.

The suspect, Manondo, posted a picture of the minister, taken at the airport, on the WhatsApp platform known as ‘OUR POLITICAL SQUARE’. Police say he captioned the photo “with insulting words.”

Five women who are members WhatsApp forum lodged a complaint at Lilongwe Police on behalf of Kamtukule.

Dauka Manondo was arrested yesterday and has been charged with Cyber Harassment, a case which contravenes section 86 of Cyber Crimes Act.

Manondo will appear in court soon to answer the said charge after completion of paperwork and investigations, according to Police.

He hails from Manondo Village, Traditional Authority Simon in Neno.
