Two die in road accident

Two people died while 18 others sustained injuries after being involved in a road accident on Monday evening at Koma Clock along the Monkey-Bay -Mangochi road.

The two have been identified as Mabvuto Galasiyano (35) of Matapang’ombe village and Francis Kaipa (30) of Namaso village both from traditional authority Nankumba in Mangochi.

Mangochi Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi said the driver who is on the run, was driving a Toyota Sparkey Station wagon registration number ZA686 from Mtakataka turn-off heading to Mangochi boma with 20 passengers on board.

Upon arrival at Koma Clock, he lost control of the motor vehicle due to speeding and the vehicle swerved to the extreme offside of the road where it overturned.

“Due to the impact Mabvuto Galasiyano and Francis Kaipa sustained head injuries and died upon arrival at Mangochi district hospital,” she explained.

Two other people, Tereza Chitedze (28) and Magret Kachere (30), sustained multiple fractures and are admitted at the same hospital while 16 others escaped with minor injuries.

The driver abandoned the motor vehicle and ran away.

Meanwhile, police are hunting for the driver. If arrested, he will appear before court to answer five charges of causing death by reckless driving,  exceeding carrying capacity, operating motor vehicle on hire or reward without permit, failing to render assistance and report an accident contrary to section 14, 83, 124 and 126(4c) of Road Traffic Act.

The Police in the district are appealing to the general public to notify them or report to any nearest Police station if they know the whereabouts of the driver.
