Malawi Police nab ‘Chamba’ farmer

He might have thought that the industrial hemp that has met positive reception in the corridors of power refers to the common hemp and that misunderstanding has landed a Blantyre man in trouble.

Police in Blantyre city have arrested a 20 year-old man for cultivating Indian hemp locally known as ‘Chamba’

MarijauanaThe suspect, Chifundo Kaliati is reported to have grown the hemp behind his house in Ndirande township in the city.

Confirming to Malawi24, Blantyre Police assistant spokesperson Andrew Mayawo said well wishers reported the farmer to the law enforcers.

“Actually we got a tip from residents around Ndirande that Kaliati has grown cannabis sativa behind his house and we went there and found twelve trees,” said Mayawo.

Meanwhile, the crop has been sent to Bvumbwe Research station as part of investigation before Kaliati appears before Blantyre Magistrate court for growing the illegal herb.

The suspect hails from Gomani village,Traditional Authority (TA) Kunthebwe in Blantyre.
