One of the country’s nongovernmental organisations which works with children and the youth, Centre for Children’s Affairs of Malawi, has welcomed the legalisation and use of industrial hemp in the country saying Malawi will benefit economically.
Speaking to Malawi24, national coordinator for the organisation who is also a global youth ambassador Moses Busher said industrial hemp has a lot of benefits in terms of economic sustenance in the country.
Busha said it is time for Malawi to realise that this is not the 1960s and Malawians should accept that the world is becoming dynamic as research is being conducted every day.
“I would like to commend Members of Parliament for accepting and passing the legalisation and use of industrial hemp bill,” said Busher.
He added that industrial hemp has no negative effects on people and what is needed is to allow farmers to grow the crop the way tobacco and other cash crops are cultivated.
According to Busher, the best way to avoid the abuse of industrial hemp is to make proper arrangements in monitoring as other people may plant marijuana inside the farm between the plants.
Busha further said that marijuana has too much content that makes people to be intoxicated and it is different from industrial hemp but they both belong to the Chamba family.
Members of Parliament in June passed a bill which will legalise the growing and use of industrial hemp in the country.
The move however has never been short of critics. Recently, executive director for Drug Fight Malawi Nelson Zakeyu said at the moment people do not know the difference between marijuana and industrial hemp hence the need to let people know the differences before the legislation is approved by the country’s president.
He said: “The difference between marijuana and industrial hemp is not clear so there is need to look into it before legalising it.”
