Malawians urged to help flood victims

President Peter Mutharika has asked Malawians to give a helping hand to people who have been affected by floods in parts of Karonga and Mzuzu City.

Through a post on his Facebook page, Mutharika said there is need for Malawians to pray for those who have lost their loved ones and property due to the floods.

“As we continue reflecting on God’s love and mercy today, let us continue praying for our brothers and sisters who have been affected by destructive floods in Karonga District and Mzuzu City townships of Chibavi, Chibanja, Masasa, Salisbury Line, Ching’ambo and Hill Top.

“May we commit through prayer the souls of those who have departed from amongst us into God’s hands for peaceful rest. In addition to prayer let us also extend a helping hand to those who have lost their loved ones and property,” said Mutharika.

He added that he has instructed government officials responsible for disaster management to be vigilant so that the victims are assisted accordingly.

On Friday, two children from the same household died in Mzuzu after two walls of their house succumbed to heavy rains and fell on them.

Three other people also died due to the floods while many others were left homeless at Masasa Township in the city.

The rains began on Thursday and fell through the night.  By Friday morning houses in some parts of Chibanja, Chibavi, and Chiputula townships had collapsed.
