Items worth millions of Kwacha have been destroyed at Mwanza Secondary School as fire has razed down a kitchen at the institution, Malawi police officials say.

The incident happened in the wee hours of Tuesday. Head teacher for the school, Derrick Mkozomba said he is suspecting that an electric fault caused the fire.

He said in the afternoon of Monday, November 9 he and other officials realized that one of the three pots in the kitchen was leaking and he told a cook to take care of the fault.

Mkozomba added that it was at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday when students at the school saw some flames from the kitchen. The students tried all their best to put it off as they couldn’t seek help from Mwanza council because the council has no fire vehicles. The fire has destroyed the three pots which according to officials at the institution are worth K9 million.
