‘Stop stealing’- Goodall Gondwe tells public Officers

As one way of ensuring that government ministries manage the little resources the country has and since Malawi has no budgetary support minister of finance and economic development has asked controlling officers to safeguard public resources.

The minister responsible Goodall Gondwe said this during the opening of an orientation workshop at Malawi Institute of Management (MIM) where Principal Secretaries will discuss how cashgate should be avoided.

“We had to assemble the Principal Secretaries who are the controlling officers and are in charge of finances in their ministries to discuss how cashgate would have been avoided and how we can make sure that it does not happen again,” said Gondwe.

He further said that the work shop will train controlling officers on the importance of abiding by good financial laws, rules and regulations which can meet the required international standards.

“It seems we have limited resources as we do not have budgetary support hence the need to manage well the finances in different ministries and there has to be a change in the use of the resources to maximise benefit to all Malawians,” he said.

Gondwe added that there are two types of reforms in the government, the Public Service Reform which the vice president Saulos Chilima is spearheading and the Public Finance Management reform conducted in the ministry of finance.
