As one way of ensuring that illegal goods are not imported in the country, the Malawi government says it is in the process of putting tight measures in order to curb the malpractice.

Minister of Trade and Industry Joseph Mwanamvekha says government is striving to tighten security in the country’s boarders so that illegal importation of goods is curbed.

“It is very disappointing that some business people import goods that are locally available in the country,” said Mwanamvekha.

He further said that some business people use other illegal routes in smuggling the products into the country from countries like Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania.

It has been established that most Malawians do not like to buy products that can be sourced locally which is said to perpetrate the tendency of importing goods that are already available in the country.
