Mutharika says no one will die of hunger.

President Peter Mutharika has assured Malawians that no citizen will die of hunger this year.

Speaking during a press briefing at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe today, the Malawi leader said the government will only manage to provide food to 500,000 Malawians, and will engage donors to help the remaining people.

“The country is moving without 40 percent donor support and is going through a financial crisis but we will make sure that nobody dies of hunger” said Mutharika.

According to reports, close 3 million Malawians will be affected by the looming hunger this year due to erratic rains during the last growing season.

As a solution, government has bought over 30 thousand tons of maize from Zambia and has also appealed to the international community to support the country with food aid.
